Welcome to Reception

We are part of one super unit called the EYFS along with our friends from nursery. The Class Teacher is Mrs Hyland and we are supported by Mrs Burnie, Mrs Seagar and Miss Rogers.

The Early Years Curriculum is delivered through a different topic each half term. The curriculum is then divided into 7 areas of learning, Communication & Language, Physical Development, Personal Social & Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts & Design. A detailed curriculum map is available to view on the school website.

What do the children get up to in Reception?

We will have some whole group sessions (Maths, Literacy, Topic, PE etc.) followed by focussed directed activities. Lots of free play inside and outside, where staff join in to enhance and model as necessary. Assemblies, these will be a mix of class, visitor and sometimes whole school assemblies (currently via the internet). We enjoy snack and lunchtime together and have lots of stories, rhymes and action songs!

I am sure your little one will be quite worn out by the end of the school day!

Reading and Phonics

Children will learn to read through the RWI program and will begin by learning the letter sounds. They will quickly move onto reading words containing the sounds they have been learning. When they are ready they will bring home a reading book which they will need to practice.

When children are early readers it is very important that they practise each day to develop their confidence and fluency.

Library Books:

All children will visit the School Library for a story, and they can choose a book, which they are allowed to take home so you can read book together, enjoying, sharing and discussing the story.

PE

In Reception we will be following the Healthy Movers Programme, this fun programme will be delivered in the Early Years Unit and there is no requirement to get changed into PE kits during this first term.

We will move to getting changed and going into the hall for our PE lessons in the Spring term and I will update you nearer the time.

Homework:

Every Friday your child will be set some fun Homework activities, these can be accessed via Class Dojo. Each activity supports and enhances learning in school. Please note homework should be completed with adult support; it is an opportunity for you to support your child’s learning.

Snack

We have a healthy morning and afternoon snack. Snack times provide an often much needed energy boost between mealtimes and an opportunity to develop social skills as we all sit together and discuss the day.
