Our Year 1 teacher is Mrs Mandy Hyland. Mrs Adelle Buchanan is the HLTA who supports learning and also leads sessions.
The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning will continue to be through a rich and varied curriculum. The children will be eased into more structured learning as the year goes on, so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners.
This term the Year 1 topic is ‘There’s no place like home’.
Throughout this topic we will be learning about the many different types of homes and the materials used in their construction. We will also explore what it was like living in the past and how everyday items, including our toys, have changed over time. Allan Gillon, Learning Officer from the Beacon, Whitehaven will be providing us with a topic box to support out learning. We will get to learn about and handle real toys and household objects from the past, deepening our learning and understanding.
We will also design and create a home for our favourite story book character, thinking about features the character would like.
Our Science topic is materials, we will be using our scientific enquiry skills to investigate materials and will be testing the suitability of different materials.
We will continue to focus on phonics, in readiness for the Year 1 Phonic screening assessment in June. We are working hard in our RWI lessons and playing lots of phonics games in order to secure our knowledge and become super readers.
