Maureen Quirk has been a valued member of the kitchen team at Hensingham Primary School for an incredible 34 years. As she prepares to retire at the end of this term, we caught up with Maureen to reflect on her time with us.
Thanks for your time today Maureen, and congratulations on 34 years of service! What do you think has changed over that time period here at Hensingham?
When I first started, it was just a junior school and then it amalgamated to include the infants too – so the number of children has changed over the years.
Of course, the team has changed over the years too.
How has your role changed since you started?
When I first started, I only used to work for one hour! I mainly used to do the tables and chairs and just helping out – I had nothing to do with the food at all then. Now, I help with everything.
What about the uniform – has that changed?
Let’s just say I am pleased the mobcap has gone! It has changed many times over the years, when we used to only wear dresses. Now the uniform is much more flattering and comfortable to wear.
Also, I am glad the grey has gone and the colours are nice and bright now.
What are you going to do next?
I am going to spend more time with my grandchildren, doing school drop-off and pick-up and make their tea.
I am also looking forward to spending more time with my sister, who is retiring at the same time.
What have you enjoyed most about your time?
It has to be the children – their characters always make me smile!
What is your favourite memory of your time?
On one of my birthdays, I hadn’t told anybody and all of a sudden, my own children came in with a cake big bunch of flowers and surprised me in front of everybody!
Amanda Brotherhood, Headteacher at Hensingham Primary School, commented, “On behalf of all the staff, parents and children at Hensingham Primary School, thank you for your incredible 34 years of dedication and care in our school kitchen. Your warmth, hard work, and friendly smile have left a lasting impression on generations of pupils. We wish you a very happy and well-deserved retirement – you will be truly missed”.
