“Intelligence and skills can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong” – John. F. KennedyÂ
Our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils develop the fundamental skills and competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing a broad and balanced curriculum with opportunities for all to be enjoyed.
he Cambridgeshire Scheme of Work for Primary School Physical Education has been produced to support the planning and delivery of National Curriculum Physical Education as a response to the 2014 review.
Physical Education is the planned, progressive learning that takes place in school curriculum timetabled time and which is delivered to all pupils. This involves both ‘learning to move’ (i.e. becoming more physically competent) and ‘moving to learn’ (e.g. learning through movement, a range of skills and understandings beyond physical activity, such as co-operating with others). The context for the learning is physical activity, with children experiencing a broad range of activities, including recognisable sporting applications, swimming, Outdoor Adventure Activities and dance.
The notion of ‘learning to move; moving to learn’ underpins a high-quality Physical Education curriculum and is where this resource aims to support staff to deliver consistently high quality Physical Education lessons.
This Scheme of Work has been a collaboration across Cambridgeshire, using the best local expertise from teachers, many staff from across five high performing School Sport Partnerships led by the Cambridgeshire County Council specialist adviser for PE and School Sport and a number of Associate Advisers.
The scheme provides a range of activity-based units of work that are progressive from Key Stage One upwards: fundamental movement skill units for Key Stage One, progressing into generic activity areas in Key Stage Two and then specific activity focus in higher Key Stage Two, which complements the National Curriculum Key Stage One and Key Stage Two National Curriculum programmes of study for Physical Education.
