PSHE and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

At Hensingham Primary School, we are committed to supporting every child to become happy, healthy and confident individuals who are ready for the opportunities and challenges of life. Our vision, “Be the Best You Can Be,” is at the heart of everything we do, alongside our core values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

From September 2026, we will be introducing a new PSHE and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum using the Kapow Primary scheme of work. This change ensures that our curriculum continues to meet the latest statutory requirements and guidance from the Department for Education, while providing pupils with a high-quality, progressive programme of learning that reflects the needs of children growing up in today’s world.

Kapow Primary provides a carefully sequenced curriculum that supports children’s personal development and wellbeing from Reception through to Year 6. The curriculum builds knowledge and skills year on year, helping children to develop confidence, resilience and the ability to make informed, responsible decisions.

Throughout their time at Hensingham Primary School, pupils will learn about:

  • Building positive friendships and healthy relationships
  • Physical and mental health, including emotional wellbeing
  • Keeping themselves safe, both online and offline
  • Respecting diversity and understanding equality
  • Personal safety, boundaries and identifying trusted adults
  • Citizenship and contributing positively to their community
  • Economic wellbeing and financial awareness
  • Growing up, including changing bodies and puberty, with age-appropriate Relationships, Health and Sex Education delivered in line with statutory guidance

Our PSHE and RSHE curriculum reflects our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience, encouraging children to care for themselves and others, make positive choices and develop the confidence to overcome challenges. Through engaging and inclusive lessons, pupils are supported to become kind, respectful and responsible members of society, enabling them to Be the Best You Can Be.

We recognise that parents and carers are children’s first educators and value the important role they play in supporting learning. As part of the introduction of our new curriculum, we have consulted with parents and carers and welcomed their feedback. Please find our Parent Consultation Letter and Long-Term Curriculum Overview below, which provide further information about the curriculum and the topics covered in each year group.

If you have any questions about our PSHE and RSHE curriculum, please contact the school. We look forward to working in partnership with families to ensure every child receives a broad, balanced and supportive education that prepares them for life now and in the future.

Pol-Ed Year 5 and Year 6

Pol-Ed supports schools in delivering expertly planned lessons designed to develop a deep awareness of risks, citizenship, and the law. The Pol-Ed team have focussed the coverage of the materials to address priority areas of policing, such as sexual violence and harassment; child on child abuse; and the perception that young people have of the police.

Our resources are built around developing a range of values, skills and attributes which will allow our pupils to apply the knowledge they learn to situations making well-balanced and positive decisions. So why Pol-Ed?

  1. Pol- Ed offers schools a range of lessons, assemblies and assessment resources that are mapped out against the PSHE Association’s Programs of Study.

  2. The resources are completely FREE for all schools to register and within a purchasing Police Force area.

  3. Our lessons have been created by subject matter experts and are quality assured by Police Officers in specialist departments to ensure all legalities are correct.

  1. Timesaving for teachers – all lessons and supporting resources are planned and ready to use and deliver and requires no additional workload for teachers.

  2. As well as meeting statutory requirements of the RSHE (Relationship, Sex, Health Education), Pol-Ed covers subjects that may otherwise not be covered in other PSHE schemes but are vital children understand.

  3. Pol-Ed provides eight Passports, which are based around key values and form a foundation for assessment of pupil’s development which can be used throughout their time in education.

Protected Characteristics

We work to ensure that our children understand that:

  • There are no outsiders at Hensingham Primary School
  • Everyone is different
  • We celebrate our differences
  • We are all equal in our differences

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Everyone in Britain is protected. This is because the Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics that we all have.

Under the Equality Act, there are nine Protected Characteristics:

  1. Age
  2. Disability
  3. Gender reassignment
  4. Race
  5. Religion or belief
  6. Marriage or civil partnership
  7. Sex
  8. Sexual orientation
  9. Pregnancy and maternity

The 9 Protected Characteristics are actively promoted in school through:

  • Our school core RESPECT Values
  • Our school behaviour policy
  • Conscious role modelling by all adults in the school community
  • Active engagement and communication with parents and carers
  • Collective Worship and class assemblies
  • Promotion of British Values across the school community
  • Discussion within curriculum subjects, taking a cross-curricular approach
  • Promoting articulation by building appropriate language and a coherent vocabulary across all subject areas
  • Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) sessions
  • Religious Education (RE) lessons, RSE lessons and Protected Characteristic talks
  • Sporting competitions, festivals and opportunities
  • Art and Cultural activities
  • Pupil Voice e.g. School Councillors, Diversity Champions, Eco Warriors and Sports Leaders
  • Educational visits
  • Real-life learning outside the classroom
  • Guest speakers and visitors from the wider community
  • Developing stronger links with the local, national and international communities
  • Extra-curricular activities, after-school clubs, charity work and work within the local community

We firmly believe that embedding Protected Characteristics into the whole school ethos at Hensingham promotes:

  • Self-esteem, self-knowledge and self-confidence of everyone in our school community
  • Respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process will be raised
  • Acceptance of responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Respect for their own and other cultures
  • Understanding of how people can contribute positively to school and home life and to the lives of those living and working in the local community and beyond
  • An understanding of Equality, Human Rights and Protected Characteristics
  • An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process
  • An appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their wellbeing and safety of all
  • An understanding that the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law
  • An acceptance that other people having different faiths or beliefs should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour
  • An understanding of the importance of identifying and combating discrimination

At Hensingham Primary School we believe that every one is valued, respected and welcome to thrive within our community.
